For the past month, my energy has been taken up by walking interviews, podcasts, and reading. Too much overthinking usually results in physical illness forcing me to stop and reconfigure back to the creative process. At first this is exhausting but eventually, it feels a relief to put down my pen and books and to head off into my studio to sit with my fabrics and photographs waiting for my energy to return.
Once it has I will set to work washing fabrics and ordering soda ash and urea for the next spurt of fabric dyeing. and printing. This will be followed by stitching. I am getting excited.
I have committed to Todmorden Open Studios so have the summer to get some new work made. TOS runs 7,8,9 September, I have given myself a deadline of August 31 to make three new pieces, one per month. I intend to use my visual research into the wasteland/Lydl site and photographs of a burnt out portacabin as starting points. This feels good to have an endpoint and some structure. All I have to do now is pace myself, not walk too much and promise myself to save books and writing until September.
